Our problem

Our customers were big fans of our Ads product. However, when it came to managing their affiliate programs, they found themselves using a variety of disjointed tools. What they really wanted was a streamlined, easy-to-use solution so we saw it as an opportunity to expand our product line.

Defining the experience

Design, product and engineering worked hand in hand every step of the way. We validated that there was an actual problem to solve, identified our immediate and potential long term users, provided feedback to each other from both a UX and technical approach and worked through several rounds of research, prototyping and ultimately building the product.

We began with focused research to understand our customers' pain points. Our findings indicated that any change would be a change for the better, but not without a few challenges to solve for:

🔑 Key Findings

  • Users wanted to be able to search for products either from within our app OR use Google and then copy + paste URLs

  • They had to log into 2 or 3 different affiliate tracking sites to compare and contrast their metrics

  • Subjective commentary from their coworkers could be helpful when choosing a product to advertise

  • Sometimes a user knew specifically which merchant to choose a product from, and other times they wanted to go with whoever would make them the most money, so we should design for both scenarios

I outlined the optimal affiliate workflow, emphasizing key actions. I shared this journey map with stakeholders and users for feedback, ensuring we were moving in the right direction.

The finished product

We wanted to meet our customers where they are, so we figured giving them the ability to search for a product, whether that be in our app, through a chrome extension or directly in their CMS was the way to go. In addition, we designed a solution with analytics being a main focal point so our users could make data-driven decisions.

Results

Our Affiliate product generated over $9M in revenue for our customers in 2022 alone. It was well received by MOST people that used it (media companies are fickle), so some were reluctant to adopt it, but saved them a ton of time, money and resources in the long run.
